Web Accessibility in Action: Basic Principles, Strategies, and Fixes
This presentation will cover key web accessibility principles, including screen reader
options and use, keyboard navigation, semantic headings, alt text, and color contrast—along
with a look at common accessibility issues that often go unnoticed.
We’ll take a deep dive into writing effective alt text, with real examples that highlight
what works (and what doesn’t). We'll also walk through a real-world case study of
identifying, debugging, and resolving keyboard navigation issues on one of our own
sites at the J. Willard Marriott Library—demonstrating how we sometimes have to get
creative when accessibility problems stem from third-party plugins or tools outside
our direct control.
Most importantly, you’ll see that web accessibility isn’t a one-time checklist—it’s an ongoing process that requires continuous attention, testing, and iteration to ensure sites remain inclusive and usable for everyone.
